Working with diskettes

Formatting diskettes

Before a diskette can be used, it must be formatted (that is, it must be given an addressing scheme). When a disk is formatted, both sides are mapped into tracks and sectors that can be addressed by the diskette controller. A portion of the disk is reserved for data about that specific disk, such as the VTOC, which shows how the partitions on the disk are allocated.

Use the format(1M) command to format a diskette. When a used disk is formatted, existing data is erased and the tracks are redefined.
