Installing, managing, and removing software

Installing software (Application Installer)

To install an application or application set:

  1. Start the Application Installer.

  2. Insert the appropriate software media (if you are not installing software from an install server).

  3. Select a media or network type from the Install From menu.

For example, choose Disk A, Disk B, CD-ROM, Other, or Network.

NOTE: You must set up an installation server before you can select Network as the installation type.

If you are installing from the network, you must enter the server name, then click on Update View to see the packages available. If the applications available on the network server are not in the standard location (/var/spool/dist), you can specify the path after typing the server name and a colon (for example: foo.sco.com:/var/spool/tmp).

When you make your selection, packages available on the medium are displayed.

  4. If you are installing from cartridge tape, be sure your tape is completely rewound before you install.

  5. Click on the icon representing the uninstalled application or application set.

  6. Click on Install.

The Add Application window appears. You might be prompted for additional information in this window. After you respond to any required prompts, the new application or application set is installed on your system.

NOTE: When you install applications, a mail message is sent to your mailbox.

  7. If a CD-ROM is used, the Application Installer leaves the CD-ROM mounted when installation is complete. Use umount(1M) to unmount the CD-ROM before removing it. Enter the following:

    umount /dev/cdrom/cdromN

where N is the CD-ROM driver number.

When a package fails to install for any reason, the GUI may still report that the set of packages that contains it was installed successfully. The message reporting the failure is generated by pkgadd(1M).

Similarly, if the removal of a package fails, the GUI does not report the failure. The icon for the set of packages goes away and is not replaced by the package icon for the package that is still on the system.

The log created by pkgadd, which contains details of the failed processes, is in /var/sadm/install/logs/pkg.log where pkg is the name of the package.

UNIX compatibility

If you cannot successfully install certain UNIX® applications, you might need to modify a variable needed by the application's installation script:

  1. Start the Application Installer.

  2. Select Actions -> Options .

  3. Type the number relating to the operating system release expected by the application.

For UNIX release 3.2, enter 3.2.

  4. Click on OK to set the new SCOMPAT option.

Copying application icons to folders

After you install an application onto your system, you can copy the icons for the individual programs associated with the application to a folder (the system determines the appropriate folder to copy the icon to, usually the Applications folder). This allows you to start the application program by double-clicking on its icon.

  1. Start the Application Installer.

  2. If the application is part of a set, double-click on the set icon (in the bottom half of the window). Otherwise, go to the next step.

Icons representing packages in the set appear.

  3. Double-click on the desired application package.

A window appears containing installable icons representing application programs contained in the package.

  4. Click on the individual application program you want to copy to a folder.

  5. Click on the Copy to Folder button.

  6. Select one of the following to select which users should receive the new icon:

    Self
copies the program to your own folder only

    Current Desktop Users
copies the program for each user currently set up to use the desktop

    Current and Future Desktop Users
copies the program for each current desktop user, and also adds it for each new desktop user that is set up later

    Specific Users
copies programs for each user you choose

  7. Click on the OK button.

An icon for the selected application program is copied to the appropriate folder.
