Adding a system entry to the Systems file

You can add the details of a remote computer with which your computer can communicate. More than one entry can be defined for a particular computer. Each entry specifies an alternative communications path, and is tried in sequential order.

To add a system using the Dialup Systems Manager:

1. Select System Add

2. You can change the information for any of the following fields:

   
   Remote system

   The name of the remote computer.

   
   Device type

   The device type that should be used to establish the UUCP link to the remote computer. Select the type of device from the scrollable list:

   • Direct connection (Direct)

   • asynchronous data over ISDN

   • data over a modem (ACU)

   • synchronous data over ISDN

   Refer to the Devices(4bnu) manual page for further information on these devices. (In the Devices file, these devices are known as Direct, ISDN_ASYNC, ACU and ISDN_SYNC respectively.)

   The devices available on your computer can be viewed using the Dialup Systems Manager; see ``Viewing the devices''.

   
   Line speed

   This is the data transfer speed (or port speed, see ``Speed considerations'') between your computer and the attached device. Select the line speed from the scrollable list.

   Select a speed of Any if the device can be used at any speed.

   NOTE: It is not possible to specify a range of speeds (for example, ``2400-9600'') using the Dialup Systems Manager. You will have to manually edit the Systems file if a range needs to be specified. (A range of speeds is useful when connecting to a modem that adjusts its speed to match the speed of the modem that answers the call.)

   Phone number

   This is the phone number used for the modem's dialer.

   ---

   NOTE: If a Direct connection has been specified in the Device type field, then the Phone number field is disabled.

   The phone number consists of numeric part and an optional alphabetic abbreviation. If an abbreviation is used, it must be present in the /etc/uucp/Dialcodes file (see Dialcodes(4bnu)). For example, the number ``CA2676'' has an associated entry in the Dialcodes file, for example CA 9=1-408767.

   In this entry, an equals sign (=) tells the modem to wait for a secondary dial tone before dialing the remaining digits. For example, 9= would dial 9, then wait for the secondary dial tone on an outside line. A dash (-) in the string instructs the modem to pause for four seconds before dialing the next digit.

   By using dialcodes, a portable Systems file can be created that can be used at a number of sites where the dialing prefixes differ (for internal phone systems).

   Enter a phone number and click on Add to add it to the list of phone numbers. The order of this list may be changed by selecting a phone number and clicking on Promote to move it upwards, or on Demote to move it downwards. A phone number may be removed from the list by selecting it and clicking on Delete.

These details may subsequently be modified or deleted.

There are two buttons present on this screen:

• Edit script allows you to edit a login chat script.

• Schedule allows you to specify an access schedule.
