Configuring and using NetBIOS

Adding NetBIOS service names to DNS

In order to use NetBIOS with DNS, you must add the NetBIOS service names to the DNS database. It is possible to add all the NetBIOS service names to the DNS database and therefore not bother configuring the NetBIOS configuration file /etc/lmhosts. Whether you decide to do this will depend on your network environment and own preferences.

When you add NetBIOS service names to the DNS database, make sure they are valid DNS names. If you are unsure whether a name is valid you can use nbtodns(1Mtcp). This command validates the name specified on the command line and prints out the valid DNS equivalent. If it prints out the same name as you specified it just means that it is a valid NetBIOS name as well as a valid DNS name.
