Tracking versions with SCCS

Terminology

A delta is a set of changes made to a file under SCCS custody. To identify and keep track of a delta, it is assigned an SID (SCCS IDentification) number. The SID for any original file turned over to SCCS is composed of release number 1 and level number 1, stated as 1.1. The SID for the first set of changes made to that file, that is, its first delta, is release 1 version 2, or 1.2. The next delta would be 1.3, the next 1.4, and so on. (For more on delta numbering, see ``Delta numbering''.) At this point, it is enough to know that by default SCCS assigns SIDs automatically.
