Adding and configuring modems

Supported modems

Any external 100% Hayes-compatible modem should work provided that it is connected to a serial port that is capable of supporting modem control protocols. Some third-party multiport smart serial cards cannot be used as they do not support modem control.

SCO has successfully tested several Hayes-compatible internal and PCMCIA modems. Some older models of internal modem have compatibility problems which prevent them from working properly. For example, they may flood the system bus with spurious interrupts, or they may not support the quiet, no-echo, or auto-answer modes.

WinModems are not supported as they rely on the host CPU to perform most of the work normally performed by the modem. Drivers for these modems are not normally made available on UNIX systems.

SCO provides a standard generic 56Kbps modem dialer for use with 56k modems. As the dialer is generic, specific vendor or model autodetection is not supported.

Use of a 56k modem does not guarantee a 56k connection. The actual connection speed depends on a number of factors:

NOTE: Only the receive speed will exceed 33.6Kbps, so connecting to another 56k modem could result in a maximum send and receive speed of 33.6Kbps.

Support for modems is provided by the modem configuration file that the vendor provides with the modem. atdialer configuration files may still be used. Consult the SCO Compatible Hardware Web Page (CHWP) for the most current hardware support information. See ``Accessing the SCO Compatible Hardware Web Pages'' for more information.

For information on uncertified modems, see ``Guidelines for uncertified modems''.
