Modeling a component is the process of determining the characteristics of a product that can be managed, then grouping those characteristics in ways that make sense. Good product models also allow for expansion and change, since every product will change over time as new functions, options and capabilities.
The DMI Specification is written so that classification occurs at the group level, rather than at the component level. This allows much flexibility for conforming to the standard. The greatest effort in writing a MIF file should go into determining the groups and the attributes contained in those groups.
