Modeling products with MIF files

Modeling products with MIF files

A MIF file is a text file in ISO 8859-1 format that follows the syntax and grammar set out in the DMI Specification. A MIF file can contain as little as one group with four standard attributes or as many groups and attributes as you choose. The value of a MIF file is that it codifies how you model your component and how you think your component should be managed.

The DMTF recognizes that systems are dynamic. Therefore, the DMI does not assume that a management application knows anything about the components on the system. It is up to the component to provide all meaningful information by means of the MIF file. Consequently, it is crucial to design the MIF file well.

This section discusses modeling methods and the basics of good MIF design. Tools for verifying MIF syntax can be downloaded from the DMTF website at http://www.dmtf.org.
